The Graduate Study Carrels are part of the J. Conrad Dunagan Library, and are administered by the Library. The Office of Graduate Studies processes and accepts applications for use of the carrels. Contact the Office of Graduate Studies for details on how to apply for a carrel.


Graduate Study Carrels Policies and Procedures

disc The Access Services Department coordinates all graduate carrel activity. Any questions or complaints should be referred to the Circulation Desk.
disc Carrels are designed to facilitate research and to provide a quiet atmosphere for study.
disc Carrels are non-transferable.
disc As graduate students you are expected to set an example of excellent library decorum.
disc It should be obvious that all library rules, procedures, guidelines and policies are expected to be adhered to by all library patrons, including recipients of graduate carrel privileges.

General Policies and Regulations:

  1. Only current graduate students of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin may obtain a carrel.
  2. Library carrel privileges are non-transferable. Other students, friends, or family members may not use your carrel.
  3. The Library does not provide office supplies (paper, ink, markers, etc.)
  4. You may keep circulating materials in your carrel if they have been properly checked-out to you. Library staff will remove any library materials that have not been stamped with a current due date. Non-circulating library materials (periodicals, reference items, newspapers, etc.) will also be removed.
  5. The carrel assigned to an individual is covered by the Library's confidentiality policy. Messages will not be delivered to carrels. Under no circumstances will staff disclose a carrel number.
  6. Library carrels are not soundproof. Please be considerate of others. Keep the door closed at all times. Keep voices low. Set cell phones to vibrate - keep conversations short.
  7. Carrels are not to be used as a meeting space/conference room. Carrels are a shared working environment dedicated to the enhancement of concentrated research and scholarship. Only one person is permitted in a carrel at a time.
  8. The Library is not responsible for the loss of anything kept in rooms LL 204 and LL230. The doors should be locked at all times. Confidential or sensitive material should never be placed or left in the carrel.
  9. No smoking or food is permitted anywhere in the Library.
  10. Coffee pots, hot plates, heaters, and other equipment of this nature are prohibited.
  11. The doors and walls must be kept free of nails, tape, or any other method of affixing objects. Nothing may be affixed to the glass in the door.
  12. Study carrels have been furnished for your use. No furniture is to be moved into or out of the room. Report loss or damage to the Circulation Desk.
  13. The Library reserves the right to revoke carrel privileges when these policies and procedures are not followed.
  14. If you lose the key, you will be charged:
    1. for LL230: $300 [$200 to replace 8 keys and $100 to rekey]
    2. for LL204: $500 [$400 to replace 16 keys and $100 to rekey]
