Information About The Library

The J. Conrad Dunagan Library: An Overview

The Library opened in a new 66,000 square foot facility in January of 2001. At full capacity it has seating for 400 students. The primary service points are on the First Floor (Circulation, Reference, Reserves, Microforms, copying, and so on). There are 42 public access workstations, 36 of the workstations have MS Office loaded; all workstations have relevant browsers and helping software (i.e. Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.). There are two enhanced workstations available for students with disabilities. Six computers are reserved primarily for library catalogue access, and available for both public (walk-in, non-UTPB affiliated) users and UTPB affiliated users; these workstations are not connected to free printing and are not licensed to access MS Office.

The library offers 7 group study rooms [Rooms 224, 226, 228 and 242, 244, 246, and 248] which may be checked out at the Circulation Desk by any currently enrolled UTPB student. Rules and regulations regarding group study room use are also available at the Circulation Desk. For graduate students, the library provides 2 graduate carrel room--carrels are assigned by Graduate Council on a semester by semester basis. Again, rules and regulations regarding their use are available at the Circulation Desk.

These facilities offer access to a diverse collection of print, microform, media and electronic collections. Due to several major consortial agreements, the library is particularly rich in electronic journals; as of January 2009, 40,040 electronic journals were available to faculty, students, and staff. Electronic materials are available to currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff both on and off-campus. The library has wireless capabilities, for further information on this capability see IRD's Wireless Internet Service page.

In addition to the general circulating collection, there is a K-12 text book collection, a Youth Books collection, an archives which collects and organizes local and university history, and a Texana Collection of circulating materials donated by Mr. J. Conrad Dunagan. In the fall of 2006 a leisure reading collection was created on the first floor and houses a small collection of fiction materials. The Atrium entrance to the library was enhanced with more comfortable furniture in 2006, and is now the designated area for casual study groups, cell phone usage, and so on.
